Theft of African grey parrot in Cambridgeshire sparks warning from National Theft Register

The National Theft Register has warned parrot owners to be on their guard following the theft of an African grey in Cambridgeshire on September 13.

Lulu was snatched, along with her six-foot cage, from its home in Ely, leaving her elderly owners distraught.

National Theft Register co-ordinator John Hayward said: “During the afternoon, a private residence was broken into when thieves stole the family pet. This is devastating for the owners who have had Lulu for more than ten years.

“We are particularly concerned as Lulu will not be receiving her normal diet and nutrition. We appeal to anyone with any information as to her whereabouts or that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the thieves.”

Mr Hayward is especially concerned because of an anonymous tip-off.
He said: “We were told that thieves intend to steal parrots in the north of England, targeting aviaries in Hull and East Yorkshire, and especially breeding pairs of African greys.

“This was anonymous information and, so far, we’ve had no parrot thefts in those areas, which is a relief. But the Ely theft means parrot keepers everywhere need to be on their guard, particularly those with external aviaries.

“If anyone sees anything suspicious, please let us know. And beware of ‘cold-callers’. If anyone requires security advice then please get in touch with us because that’s what we’re here for.”

Anyone with information about this theft should contact the National Theft Register. Tel: 01869 325699.
